Project General
Since race, gender, and class are fundamental components of contemporary society, and with San Francisco's diverse racial constituency, Show Some Color is a series of video projects intended to explore, through female perspectives, how American citizens in San Francisco represent and define themselves racially. Post-9/11, with the Patriot Act, and increased racial profiling, and the Jena-6 protests, America is at a stage where race is an increasingly more sensitive topic that most prefer to remain silent on, yet it is intrinsic to individuals living in America. The distinctiveness of racial differences is concealed by over simplified views or the so-called "political correctness" that homogenizes and marginalizes mainstream discourse.
This project intends to investigate the complexity of race and how San Franciscans deal with race now through the lens of different participants of the project. Part one of the project focus on three young Asian American women's rather intimate dialog that reveals Asian immigrants' family value and their own desires. Part two of the project focus on how one can define their racial identities through performance.
Support for this project is provided by Southern Exposure's Alternative Exposure Grant Program.
Promotion and Pre-production
First, an open call will be posted to the major social network services including Facebook, Myspace, and Craigslist to target San Franciscan women. This open call, included in Appendix A at the end of this document, will invite any woman over the age of 21 to participate in a live event to create short video segments on their racial identity. The general guideline for the segment is to answer and interpret, "What does it mean to be a _____ woman?" The Fabricators will then invite six participants from the applicants from the open call. Then, at a live event at 111 Minna Gallery, outlined in section 4 below, with the Fabricators production team, each woman will be creating a five minute video with video crew. The women will be encouraged to express themselves in any way possible, and not limited to monologue. Each segment will be uploaded to the project website as they are shot. On this site, and live at the space, these videos will be voted on by people attending the event. All selected women who participate in the live event will receive $75 each. Other incentives for women participants include a chance to be on public access TV on AccessSF, live free promotion on the Internet, to get to network with artists/producers in attendance, and one free drink per participant. Also, after the public TV event, the top voted participant from the website will receive an additional $150 with web announcement.
Also, after the casting period, profile of six women participant will be release on project website. Based on their profile, Jay Dedman invites video bloggers and makers to team up with individual women. The team will be creating five minute videos during and after the main stage recording. Audience are also encouraged to bring in their own video and digital camera to join in groups and interview women participants. After the event, there will be a period of voting on the best video produced from the event whereby a top independent video producers will receive $100 each.
The Live Event: Show Some Color Live @ 111 Minna Gallery
The production of the videos is to take place at 111 Minna Gallery in downtown San Francisco from 5PM until 9 PM on October 30, 2007. During the event, all women and independent video producers will be recorded and recording, respectively. Also, there will be an official recording setup on the main stage in the gallery manned by the Fabricators production crew to produce five minutes segments with each women participant. This will be on the primary stage in the Zappa Lounge at 111 Minna and will have a large screen for projections behind it as a background.
Meanwhile groups of videobloggers and audience will team up with individual women performer to create five minutes interview video in the gallery space. These two groups of video recordings will happen simultaneously.
Also, the Fabricators will have a production workstation setup with a large storage capacity hard drive where video is edited live and uploaded for initial web voting on the Fabricators project website. Whenever the main stage is not being used, the video out of the Fabricators video workstation will be projected to expose the edit and upload process. The independent video producers will also upload their video after event. The top voted video clip will be awarded $100.
Also, of note is that all entrants to the event must sign a release form so that any interviews and other recordings may be legally used in the project for the night, uploaded onto the project website, and for clearance to be on AccessSF. And, the footage the independent video producers record is to be granted non-exclusive rights to the Fabricators for unlimited use.
The flow of the night begins with the first Show Some Color (part 1) playing on a large screen on the main 111 Minna stage where the women will be recorded later. This will transition into the initial stage recording and independent video producers recording and interview six women performers in the space about the project and relevant issues. This recording will take place for 3 hours approximately. Then, the rest of the night will consist of DJ's Zhu Jian Hui and Raphael Canedo live mixing of music composed from audio pieces collected from the recorded media from the night. Also, video output from the live studio workstation editing process will be used as a backdrop to encourage socializing about the topics and the project. The goal of this segment of the community event is to build involvement around this project and to collect contacts to insure that the final steps of the Show Some Color 2 will be sustainable.
The final step of the project is calculate from the web-based voting who is leading the voting by the third week of November. The top voted participant and video producer will be announced and awarded with $150 and $100. All participants will be thanked and given much credit due.
Post-production
After the event ends, then all footage will be collected and edited into a full 28 minute segment to be broadcast on AccessSF1 channel 29 on November 18 and 25, Sunday 3PM. Also, this video will be made available and promoted on the Fabricators project website. Appropriate press releases and announcements of this television broadcast will be made as well in order to explain voting and to refresh the community of participants.
Web Community
The web community is of major importance this project even before the live event because it will be the hub for communication about the project and recruit participants and video bloggers. Also, during the live event, footage will be uploaded directly to the Fabricators project website. After the live event voting will continue on this website and throughout the airing of the final high quality 28 minute video on AccessSF. It is vital that it be high quality and fit well in the contemporary aesthetic popular on Facebook and Myspace so that the ideas spread to their maximum capability.
AccessSF Broadcast
On November 18 and 25, 3:00PM Show Some Color 2 will be shown on AccessSF channel 29. Viewers are encouraged to visit the project website and vote for their favorite female participant and videos from video bloggers. The top independent video producer will receive $100 and the top voted woman participant will be recognized from this to receive $150 after this event.
