While some of the same motives will overlap, this version of SCALE will take on a different shape for the simple reason that there's new blood, and new blood inevitably runs a different course. 		+	The name SCALE is significant and it means a lot to us. It also means a lot to the Oxford English Dictionary, which maintains 10 definitions for the word. Ranging widely, it casts SCALE as an instrument (apparatus for weighing; a ladder), a space (a hut, shed; a centre of trade or traffic), a collective (a maniple, squadron, or battalion), and an action (a succession or series of steps or degrees; a graduated series, succession, or progression). We happily accept and endorse all these interpretations—especially when combined—because they help shape SCALE into a manifold, open and flexible environment fit for fruitful engagement. In this sense, SCALE is a space that welcomes many to weigh-in in order to make that space dynamic. <br><br>
		+	SCALE will be published online (www.scalejournal.org) and in print every other month as opposed to the previous monthly rate. This extra gap will allow for one month to generate new material, and another month to fine-tune that material (if necessary) through an editorial process. As opposed to the scramble-and-submit-shit routine that happens with many publications, SCALE aims for a slow, engaging and participatory process that involves experimentation and play. This desire for quality over quantity could be called SCALE's raison d'être—and it's also the impetus for the theme of the first issue: SLOW. <br><br>
		+	SLOW, like SCALE, can be defined and explored in many ways. We're interested in a collective investigation into the properties, potentials and possibilities of SLOW as a tool, a methodology, and a quality. We encourage you to loiter, reflect, engage, daydream, revel, think, pause, mine, wait and drift with (in) your chosen medium; to slow down language and open its “silent pregnancies” like Rimbaud did with the letters A, E, I, O, U in Vowels (1871), where he found A to be “bursting with flies” and I “In wild denial”; to retard cinema to extensive scene and image as Douglas Gordon did in 24 Hour Psycho (1993); to stall art as Dave Hickey suggests: "I want an image that I can keep looking at, some kind of sustained eloquence, an image that perpetually exceeds my ability to describe it... I want 'slow art' that flourishes in the problematic of its desirability".

He obtained two Masters in Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology in Fudan (Shanghai) and SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London).		Zafka is also an acclaimed sound artist and experimental musician. His art works have been published and exhibited in China, the US, Europe, and Asia.
