Samantha Culp Website, Locking Down Shanghai

I first worked with Samantha when she served as the Director of RMBCity for Vitamin Creative Space here in Beijing. Samantha, like myself, had lived in the South of China, but her Cantonese far surpassed mine!

She had been working on several interesting projects like her New Territories Border Studies Tumblr and Many Mansions film, and needed a simple simple site like some others we had built for Matt Hope and others. We cranked out her simple and clean design, connected with her domain name, and her blog has been flowing since. Check out her posts!

More recently Samantha is a talent scout at W+K in Shanghai:

Recently I became the “creative talent scout” for Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai – their first in this somewhat bizarre-sounding role, I believe. I’ll be helping to expand W+K’s network of emerging Chinese talent and pool of creative collaborators (with an emphasis on China, but also across Asia and internationally).

I’ll also be curating an events program in our office here, open to the Shanghai creative community at large, to bring in cross-disciplinary inspiration and strengthen W+K Shanghai as a local creative hub.

Follow Samantha on her blog.

Open Hardware Manufacturing (from China)

I recently spoke at TTI Vanguard's NEXTGEN conference in Miami. Totally great experience to talk to some very high level folks about the work we are doing as Fabricatorz on the Qi Hardware and Milkymist Video Synthesizer project. Here are my slides. The first set I did on my laptop, and the second set I *performed* using the Milkymist! In 2012, I will try to use the Milkymist for any performances (no more presentations!).

I should note that the presentation title reflects popular interest in some of my topics, and not the specific words I would choose to represent what we are working on. In particular, we are staying away from using the words FREE, OPEN, COPYLEFT now in favor of Sharing, hence Sharism. Also, the word Hardware is a bit problematic because of what it conjures up for computer nerds as this an already manufactured piece of hardware, like the 400K iphones foxconn is churning out a day. We take it to mean more like the glass or metal that is part of a final product. To consider the Milkymist or our projects FROM CHINA is not completely accurate. While I spend a lot of time in China, the Milkymist in particular is manufactured mostly in Taiwan.

Oh well, words are words are words! Check out the slides below and please share. They are (shared by) me, aka: Fabricatorz.

Ask me about the event the next time you see me; I have some great stories to tell since this event was supposed to be mostly private during the conference.

In a more public showing, Yi from Qi Hardware is presenting about the Milkymist tonite (中文 at Xinchejian, the Shanghai-based hackerspace we held the first Sharism Presents Shanghai.

Don't forget to Buy a Milkymist One for yourself or your friendz :)

Fabricatorz Invite All to Sharism Forum at Get It Louder

Sharism Forum 2010.10.22 Shanghai 800 SHOW

The Fabricatorz will be in China the third week of October coordinating the first Sharism Forum at Get It Louder 2010 in Shanghai on 22 October, 2010. The Forum brings together thinkers, practitioners and activists whose work concerns and shapes the global movement of a new sharing culture. We have invited open-source entrepreneurs, community leaders, academics, artists and critics to actively advance the agenda of Sharism. We hope you can attend the forum!

This is a major milestone event for the Sharism project connecting together the larger picture of the global sharing culture between Creative Commons, Wikipedia, Free Network Services like Status.Net, Copyleft Hardware, and the sharing activities that happen on commercial sites like Flickr. Since Fabricatorz is a global company operating in both San Francisco and China, this project is close to our hearts in connecting many of the greatest people we know working in Internet, Business, and Culture in the region.

Get It Louder is China's most influential and closely-watched exhibition of emerging, young talent across creative disciplines. Get It Louder 2010 debuted in Beijing with great fanfare and press. It opens in Shanghai on 22 October until 7 November, 2010. The theme for this year's event is Sharism! Get It Louder Shanghai kicks off with the Sharism Forum that will segue into the opening of the exhibits at 8 PM.

We've been working on this massively over the last few months and hope you will join us to spread the word about this event globally, online and offline. We will do more Sharism events in the future, but right now need your support to make the project expand by using the tags #SHARISM and #SHARISM2010 online. You can learn more about sharism now: sharism.org
