Libre Graphics Meeting 2011 Ramping Up

Totally inspired from seeing this great little short by Jakub Szypulka about our favorite conference that help put on, Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM), coming May 10-13, 2011 to Montreal.

Reclaim your tools. from Jake on Vimeo.

The Libre Graphics Meeting 2010.

A film by Jakub Szypulka

From the Create Project Mailing List, where LGM project is coordinated like many other plans and specs, Jakub said:

Hey guys,

I just finished editing "Reclaim your tools", a short film about the
Libre Graphics Meeting 2010 in Brussels.

Here is the link: http://vimeo.com/18568225

All the filming and editing as well as the music was done by myself.
The movie is just some two and a half minutes, but I believe it might
be a useful marketing tool for LGM.

What I'm especially proud of is that everything you can see was done a
HUNDRED PERCENT using opensource software! (minus camera firmware I
suppose, haha)

Feel free to share the movie where ever you want! The only thing I'm
asking for is that you include my name.

As I count film-making to graphics, I feel that open source video
editing software should be a part of the LGM conference. Thus, I'd be
more than happy to have a short talk about the film at the next LGM. I
would present my workflow as well as point out areas where improvement
is possible (and sometimes really necessary) compared to closed
source, commercial software, which I've been using for a longer time.
What do you guys think about that?

I really hope you'll enjoy it just as much as I enjoyed making it!
Can't wait to hear your comments!

Jakub Szypulka

Totally inspirational Jakub! We at Fabricatorz will be ramping up our involvement towards the conference, especially since we love Montreal, Status.Net, have Fab affiliate CelineCelines there, and want to put on some really great Sharism-based events on this year!

Make sure to put LGM2011 on your calendar and join us at the Create Project to get involved deeper.

Laoban Soundsystem to be Exhibited at “The Border Show” in Hong Kong

The Fabricatorz are on the road this week, kicking off 2011 the right way. Founder, Jon Phillips will be teaming up with Matt Hope to bring the Laoban Soundsystem to The Border Show. The exhibition, organized by The Society for Experimental Cultural Production, features recent art concerning border mechanisms of the Pearl River Delta:

Taking place inside a set of shipping containers placed amid the hulking post-industrial buildings of the New Territories halfway between the urban cores of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, this exhibition proposes a new relationship between these two cities and the wider region by approaching the ontology of the border crossing.

The event kicks off on January 8 (running through the 28th of the month). Laoban will be providing the musical backdrop for the entire opening evening!

In the coming weeks, Laoban Soundsystem will be releasing new plans, photos, and even more media through it's homepage. For more details on The Border Show, check out the event page, and look check this space again soon for recaps and photos from Hong Kong!

Fabricatorz Week in Review: July 11 - 18

This week's Fabricatorz update is chalk-full of interviews, project iterations and conferences!

Getting things rolling, Christopher Adams will be speaking at the joint conference COSCUP/GNOME.Asia 2010, which takes place August 14-15. His topic will be "Elements of Typographic Freedom."

Another Fabricatorz developer, Barry Threw, recently released StringPort, a one-of-a-kind computer interface for stringed instruments! StringPort arrived in response to the limitations many stringed performers find in MIDI programming and capturing compelling recordings.

In StatusNet land, Derek Derouin has been hard at work on the company's own weekly StatusReport. Fabricatorz founder, Jon Phillips will be speaking, on behalf of StatusNet and free software, at FISL11 (Fórum Internacional Software Livre), which will be taking place this month (July 21-24) in Brazil.

This Sunday (July 18th) marks the Federated Social Web Summit, and Fabricatorz Florica and Jon have been working, in Portland, on representing new standards and agreed upon best-practices in web development.

Meanwhile, The Open Clip Art Library continues it's evolution, following the recent release of Version 2.3. The FCRC Logo Design Contest deadline was pushed back an extra week (from July 9 to July 16) in order to accommodate for all of the incredible entries. Contest participants can expect an announcement of the winning design this Monday (July 19)! OCAL has also recently received recommendations from Luther College: Library and Information Services and @BobChao.

Jon has been all over the map this week, and is also featured in a Q & A at the Libre Graphics Meeting, defining the gathering and it's personal relevance. Another interview, curtesy of the Meeting, is documented on a recent rejon.org post.

Solid work across the board from the Fabricatorz team. We'll continue bringing updates on these and future projects as the weekly reports continue!
