I recently spoke at TTI Vanguard’s NEXTGEN conference in Miami. Totally great experience to talk to some very high level folks about the work we are doing as Fabricatorz on the Qi Hardware and Milkymist Video Synthesizer project. Here are my slides. The first set I did on my laptop, and the second set I *performed* using the Milkymist! In 2012, I will try to use the Milkymist for any performances (no more presentations!).

I should note that the presentation title reflects popular interest in some of my topics, and not the specific words I would choose to represent what we are working on. In particular, we are staying away from using the words FREE, OPEN, COPYLEFT now in favor of Sharing, hence Sharism. Also, the word Hardware is a bit problematic because of what it conjures up for computer nerds as this an already manufactured piece of hardware, like the 400K iphones foxconn is churning out a day. We take it to mean more like the glass or metal that is part of a final product. To consider the Milkymist or our projects FROM CHINA is not completely accurate. While I spend a lot of time in China, the Milkymist in particular is manufactured mostly in Taiwan.

Oh well, words are words are words! Check out the slides below and please share. They are ✳ (shared by) me, aka: ✳ Fabricatorz.

Ask me about the event the next time you see me; I have some great stories to tell since this event was supposed to be mostly private during the conference.

In a more public showing, Yi from Qi Hardware is presenting about the Milkymist tonite (中文 at Xinchejian, the Shanghai-based hackerspace we held the first Sharism Presents Shanghai.

Don’t forget to Buy a Milkymist One for yourself or your friendz

Dan and his wife are both great contemporary composers living in Houston. We hope to do more great projects together soon. They remind me that to make a real company, especially long term, you have to have solid family and healthy growth.

Anyway, they have a great lil family and a cute kid! Here’s to the FabriZajicek family!

In early September, Fabricatorz were contracted by Creative Commons to redesign and launch an updated website design in time for the Creative Commons Summit and its fall fundraising campaign. Later we were to roll-out the same theme across their other major websites. That means we had to crank out in a short time a theme that could be simplified, controlled from one set of master files, and change quickly based upon regular direction from CC staff, while making sure everything works well across five web engines: the main wordpress site, civicrm, the cc licensing engine, CC’s Wiki and search.creativecommons.org.

Christopher from Fabricatorz designed the site from some various suggestions from Creative Commons CEO Cathy Casserly and board member Esther Wojcicki. Christopher wisely pushed to build the design on top of HTML5Boilerplate, so that the site would be stable across modern browsers and all the way back to IE 7 and above on Windows, since many Creative Commons website viewers use Internet Explorer on Windows.

Like Open Font Library, the site is also built using CSS media queries so the design is responsive to different devices from desktop to iPad to mobile phone. And, since the site is HTML5, its using the latest in stable open web technologies.

The above CC Search is now fully themed to fit in as well, with the entire Creative Commons website. This small portal actually gets a lot of traffic from the main Creative Commons website, so its important that it works decent and can be a lightpost illuminating the path to Creative Commons-licensed content.

Fabricatorz are available now for hire to build websites, web apps, convert your website to the future, translate your site into many different languages like Chinese and/or start from the bottom or top, and complete your project! We are lining up projects for 2012 fast. Let’s talk about how we can work together on your project.

I also shared my new markiting project and heard great things from local investors, the progress of Yeeyan from akid, all while sampling some amazing South African wines.

There is a slow churn that happens in the background. From Fabricatorz build-up to the Sharism Makerlab in Poland, the goal of Fabricatorz is to be the kings and queens of creativity. We are the CIA of creation. We like to be airlifted to most any place in the world, and accel(erate) on-demand. We are people too. We need to have fun, and make some cool projects in the midst of the grind doing humachine work for clients and ourselves.

As planned, I dropped myself into LONDON to support Fab affiliate Michelle Thorne, who runs global events for Mozilla, and who put on the Mozilla Festival. Fabricatorz works with Mozilla regulary, in China particularly, but I particularly wanted to see how Mozilla Foundation (MoFo) is doing growing the open web. I’m very appreciative to the large turn-out and to see so many great journalists there like our friend Bilal from Al Jazeera, and Brian Behlendorf from MoFo board in attendance.

I spent my time with new friend Andy Ellis who is a pro UX designer and VJ, and with our friend Ian Forrester from BBC, who wrote up a nice post about working on the Future Everything conference looking at he future of clubbing, dj’ing and vj’ing. Naturally, I showed off the Milkymist One and we talked a lot about how we can hack on things together.

I do think though that the format for nearly any hackfest is way too short to actually write code. However, this type of MozFest Hackfest is well suited to doing some creative exercises, but it reminds me that the most important part of events (well life in general), is to make better relationships with people. It is very easy to be a uber-nerd technological determinist or become the dad in the garage working on Open Hardware (the project with a broken gear as a logo) where the motto might be “hacking is jacking,” rather than “Hi, my name is Jon. I would like to be your friend.” The hardest part to events, is to focus on meeting people and just shutting the laptop. For me, I have to always work on listening rather than just always being @rejon. From these realizations I have decided that I will no longer give slide show presentations unless its the only option for very high impact events, and I will not bring my laptop to events because its a blocker to meeting people!

Overall, the MozFest was a great success because I became closer friends with four people in particular: Andy Ellis who is a VJ expert, Renata Avila from CC Guatemala and Global Voices who I have always wanted to get to know better, Agata from CC Poland who helped us put on the Sharism Makerlab in Poland, and the always cool Hyojung Sun who, like me is a digital anarchist, now doing her PhD at Edinburgh, where she is the resident skeptic about copyright. I’m super happy I focused and talked more with these friends and talked shop. More coming soon! I was also lucky enough to stay with my old friend Jeff Kuntz, now a journalist in London living with his cool wife Dorrie. And, I last minute lucked out to go to a science startup meetup powered by the excellent Kaitlin Thaney.

Now, onto the meat of this post. I spend a lot of time in Beijing now. While walking through a local market, I found a shop that sells black markers; I’m talking the graffiti kind! I bought a box of 10 for 10 RMB on the spot, and my life has changed.

I started by marking out unnecessary text, but have progressed to blocking out all text.

A bought some jeans at Muji, so had to take out the tag.

I even took this further to realize how much paper is wasted in publicity, so I’ve decided to take it back, and re-use it, make it personal, and then redistribute. Check out these Milkymist fliers I made.

The real Milkymist please stand up. These are Chinese fliers for massage and special services you get on your doorstep everyday, now converted to a better use.

This is just a straight up marker flier on the back of a Qatar Air placemat. It’s kind of cheating.

On the back of a bi-folded business card from some cafe.

All you need to do to be a post-graffiti artist to do marking, is to buy some markets and take control of the propaganda around you by changing it. Join me in the Marking movement! Its REAL metadata.

Tomorrow in Beijing, come to the monthly Sharism Presents Beijing where I will share my new marking project. And, if you are attending the MozCamp in Kuala Lumpur this weekend, I’ll see you there with my markers, sans-laptop.

Pre-Creative Commons Global Summit, Sept 15-16, 2011, Warsaw, Poland

The SHARISM MAKERLAB will be held in Warsaw on Thursday, September 15 and Friday, September 16, 2011, right before the Global Creative Commons Summit. Our two-day event joins international makers, progammers, artists, musicians, designers, and thinkers with local collaborators, to work towards the goal to start the day with ideas to share, media to select (Audio, Video, Objects and Web), and an end goal to produce work to be shown the following night a public exhibition. The event starts with an overview, and then participants are to work in teams to make projects during the day. At the end, they come together to share their creations to Warsaw and visiting Creative Commons guests in town. The entire event will be live streamed, photoblogged, and massively tweeted. The event is free and open to the public. Registration prior is encouraged. If you are interested in hosting a Sharism Makerlab, please email the sharism team.

Released today is the monthly Qi Hardware’s news where you’ll see a veritable explosion of developments.

Beyond the fun news of the homebrew CMOS project making the world’s smallest Nyan Cat, Fabricatorz Christopher Adams provided some design tweaks to the upcoming Milkymist One product launch:

The changes are included in the upcoming Milkymist One RC3 hardware with the new logo laser etched onto the top of the case, seen below.

And then you can also see it propagated to the box design:

You can also see on the latest news the full spread of the slides I developed for FISL12 in Brazil:

This just scratches the surface of the last month of news from the Qi Hardware Project. Please read about the other developments and join the copyleft hardware revolution!

Watch me give the first complete Milkymist One presentation of the year, and check out this slide deck and feel that the Fabricatorz worked on for the upcoming Milkymist One, video synthesizer. Christopher came up with logotype with the Orbitron font, and I pulled together the general messaging, color palette and slide deck you will start seeing more and more as we move toward the Milkymist One RC3 launch. Its coming very soon!

(Download presentation)

(Use your keyboard arrows or click on the image to advance the slides.)

Also, I converted the original Fabricatorz update to the Qi Hardware look and feel, and Nanonote products, which needs to be distributed across sites, products and media:

(Download presentation)

We really are seeking feedback on these slide decks. What make sense? What looks good, bad, and how do you receive the messaging? Qi Hardware is Copyleft Hardware.

UPDATE: Qi Hardware and Nanonote use the Dustismo font. Added links to the SVG files for presentation. If you want to see the magic, then open the files to see the magic.

One of my duties on the Fabricatorz client project, AcaWiki, is to present when possible about the project. We are supporters of AcaWiki and are actively growing the academic summaries and community. Below is a presentation I made at FISL12 in Porto Alegre, that provides an overview of the problems the AcaWiki project addresses, and the solutions its provides. Its very general, and for explaining the project’s drive and goals to get more people involved. Please do give your feedback and use the slides freely:
