The Fabricatorz is a global production company that builds software, hardware and projects with the power of Sharism.

The Fabricatorz makes successful projects from start to finish, including development and community management. We specialize in Free and Open Source Software, Creative Commons technology, and growing on-line and off-line communities in San Francisco, China and the Arab World.

The company builds upon the current roster of fabricatorz’ skillsets. The company currently consists of Jon Phillips with years of experience in new media production, the software industry, building communities and free/open software development. Brad Phillips delivers with his general production magic and a specific skillset in mobile development, 3D design and virtual reality production. In 2010, the team is building upon the skillsets of publisher Christopher Adams, hacker Bassel Safadi, media technologist Barry Threw, and writer Spencer Young. The company works in San Francisco and Beijing in order to serve as local interface for many forms of creative production. In these locations the team scales with new people, adapting to each project.

People

Jon Phillips, Founder + Developer

Jon Phillips is founder and developer of Fabricatorz, a global open production company fabricating total creative and commercial projects primarily between San Francisco, Beijing, and the Web. With Bassel Safadi in 2010 he co-founded Aiki Lab in Singapore, the Aiki Lab Cultural Center in Damascus and the Aiki Framework Open Source Web Framework. In 2002 he helped launch the open source drawing tool, Inkscape, founded the Open Clip Art Library (2004), taught design+technology at San Francisco Art Institute, built Creative Commons community and business development strategies from 2005 until 2008 and directed community for Status.Net (Identi.ca). Since 2009 in China, he builds Qi Hardware (is Copyleft Hardware) with Wolfgang Spraul, the Laoban Soundsystem with artist Matt Hope and with Isaac Mao and Christopher Adams he leads the Sharism project. .

Brad Phillips, Developer

Brad Phillips is a developer and new media artist dealing in all forms of digital art. Having 4+ years of experience in 3D and interactive digital art creation and nearly 10 years of music performance and audio editing experience, much of his current work attempts to treat audio as an integral part of an interactive virtual experience. His interactive artwork developed the company (http://semiautomatic3d.com) and has been publicly shown most recently at the spring 2008 UIC Art Department show. Chicago Public Radio’s weekly program, “Hello Beautiful“, featured Phillips’ work in spring 2008.

Brad graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in May of 2008 with a degree in Electronic Visualization where he studied with Daria Tsoupikova, Sabrina Raaf (http://raaf.org), and Daniel Sauter (http://daniel-sauter.com/). His specialties include interactive environment development, virtual reality, processing, music performance, and audio production.

Christopher Adams, Developer

Christopher Adams is a publishing professional and free culture advocate based in Taipei and Beijing, who runs his own book production and typesetting practice. Freesouls: captured and released by Joi Ito was his first fully Creative Commons-licensed book project. Christopher is a co-founder of Sharism.org and a member of the Creative Commons Network. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a degree in Cognitive Science.

Bassel Safadi, Developer

Bassel Safadi is a software developer and a 3D technical director with ten years of practical experience.
He has extensive experience in open source development including Linux kernel and Apache server. He started web application development in 2000 and 3D visual effects in 2005.

His latest work includes a 3D photo realistic reconstruction of the old city of palmyra (Syria), real time visualization, and developing a web programming framework (i.e., aikiframework).

He graduated from Riga technical university (rtu) Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (Latvia), with a bachelor in computer science in 2001. He has also obtained a M.Sc.IT from the University of Damascus (Syria) in 2004.

Helena Xiaowu WANG, Developer

Helena Xiaowu WANG is based in Beijing. She majored in sociology education in the Capital Normal University. She has acted in an independent movie, written dozens of articles for newspapers and magazines on music, local movies and done culture reviews. For the last 7 years she managed the Beijing Art Now Gallery. Now she does art consultanting, curates photography exhibitions, writes poems and short stories. She is learning spanish. Barry Threw, Developer

Barry Threw is a technologist working to enable digital media artwork. He develops systems and tools for rich immersive and interactive media experience; combining sound, video, network, and audience interactions.

His education was spent studying the intersection of music and media technology. He holds dual majors in Music Engineering and Music Synthesis from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA; and an MFA in Electronic Music & Recording Media from Mills College in Oakland, CA.

Daniel Zajicek, Developer

Daniel Zajicek is a composer and video artist with experience working in traditional, electro-acoustic, new media, and theatrical forms. His work explores the human psyche through a combination of stylistic means. Most recently he completed, a multi-media opera titled “Portrait-TV-Man,” that incorporates live video, performers, a puppet, and electronics, along with a diverse array of musical influences. Other recent projects include “Punk-Truck-Love” for bass clarinet and electronics, and “Dinosaur” for piano and electronics–the two works reflecting the impact of punk rock and drum and bass on Daniel’s compositions.

Beyond music Daniel is also active as a video and media artists–with his videos being published through buffetDVD.com and recent sounds installations at Taipei National University of the Arts.

He holds bachelors degrees in composition and piano from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, a MM in composition from the University of North Texas, and is currently completing his dissertation for a DMA from Rice University in Houston, TX.

Jakub Szypulka, Developer

Jakub Szypulka is both an artist and a developer. As a member of the Tango design group, he specializes in the creation of icon artwork. He is a passionate film-maker and composer, having covered several free and open source conferences so far. Jake is currently a Law student at Heidelberg University in Germany.

Patrick W. Deegan, Developer

Patrick W. Deegan is an East Asia scholar working primarily on culture and society. He has taught and helped develop major programs at several universities including SDSU, Peking University, Cornell University, and his current position at the University of Oregon.

Spencer Young, Developer

Spencer Young is a writer and editor. He is cooler than you. He writes for San Francisco Bay Guardian and is lead editor on Scale Journal
