  2. It’s always a relief to see someone mixing racial barriers outside our current commercial entertainment industry which by its nature taxes us with the need to purchase. Your performace remains accesible and personal. It’s your ‘everyday’ act of dancing, and your passion to express who you are, that resonate. While your performace is deceptively easy, for many out there it’s not as easy to mix races and cultures. But, that is what some artists do so well, put out ideas and expressions of self that open up possibilities, and raise more questions. I like to think that process can be expressed in many ways. Magdalena did her part.

  4. while energetic and well-intentioned, the piece fails to examine the history between black and white americans or make a critical analysis of current relations. soul’s performance utilized movements and gestures that are stereotypically black, making her seem like little more than a modern al jolson. loving black people is great, but it’s important to explore the performer’s positionality, why white people are drawn to black expression, dynamics between white women and black men, overt and covert racism, exotification, co-opting culture, white perceptions of having “no culture,” the power of the white voice, etc., etc., etc. until that’s taken into account, “i love being black” will remain trite and superficial.

and it’s meaningless to apologize for offending. if members of the group you claim to love have problems with the way that love is expressed, it’s time to examine your methodology. examine your motives.

  5. I find it strange anyone is offended by your dancing! It is clear you are not making fun of anyone, especially not black culture. I do not find your dancing oppressive or offensive. I love your dancing and enthusiasm. Thank you for all your great work!

  16. I love that you have fun dancing, but what is up with the title of the piece. YOU MISS ARE NOT BLACK, Black is not a state of mind. We are a people. And unless you are born black, baby you are an admirer of our culture. Not part of it.
